Contrary to popular belief, constraints are not a negative element: they are an inevitable aspect and therefore we just have to learn how to manage them better

 

With the right approach, the constraints become the lever on which to act in order to quickly obtain significant improvements to the system and to keep it under control more simply

Five Focusing Steps

  1. IDENTIFY the system constraint(s)

  2. Decide how TO EXPLOIT the constraint

  3. SUBORDINATE everything else to the above decision

  4. If not sufficient, ELEVATE the system constraint

  5. WARNING: if in the previous steps a constraint has been broken, START AGAIN FROM STEP 1, but don't let inertia become the new system constraint

To someone who hasn't fully mastered the Theory of Constraints, it might seem that constraints are everywhere in the system and constantly shift, making it impossible to keep control over them.​

Sometimes, this happens because the right constraint-management policies are not applied. Other times, we stop at the first superficial and empirical findings in search of the constraints without going deep enough.
